10 years ago, Betul (Beti) Akdemir joined Lida Diamond as creative director and since then the brand has evolved more into retail aspect as well. New generation is coming along with Ilker, the eldest son of Erol and Betul has joined the business. He is bringing in fresh perspectives on growing the business and infusing the brand with ideas that attract new generation of diamond and high jewellery buyers while honouring the tradition.

I have seen them over the past 8 years all around the world from Middle East to Europe and America and have always been in awe of their creativity. They excel in mixing and matching various gemstones, unique and never seen before gems and rare diamond shapes.

After many years of admiring their one of a kind jewellery, finally it was time to meet the genius behind all this creativity and elaborate designs.

A few weeks ago Tracey and I travelled to Mumbai, India where Kumud Hirawat, the Creative Designer of Kamyen resides. We were received with the warmest welcome to their house and later on the workshop. We had a chance to spend few days with Kumud and watching her in her element, doing her magic as well as trying on the latest Kamyen creations that haven’t been shown in public yet.

Originally from Jaipur, Rajesthan, Kumud’s upbringing was surrounded by gems and jewellery; she is the third generation of gemstone merchants in Jaipur. Being an artist or better to say a painter, she has creativity flowing in her blood and with her knowledge of gemstones and diamonds; she has the best vision when it comes to designing jewellery. After getting married, she moved with her husband to Antwerp, Belgium and then returned to India to start establishing Kamyen Jewellery with her three children; Pooja, Keshav & Karan.
Out of the three, Karan is the most similar to Kumud with an eye for design. Being a talented photographer, he sees and breathes design, and currently started a men’s collection for Kamyen with cufflinks, brooches and bracelets. Pooja and Keshav are heavily involved in the marketing and smooth running of the operations, while also sourcing stones and liaising with clients.

During our stay in Mumbai, we managed to see one of their workshops and had the opportunity to see Kumud’s interacting with craftsmen to bring her visions to life.
When asked her about her designing process, she answered that first she sees the sourced gemstones and then starts designing around their colour and shapes to enhance their natural beauty. Because of her family background in gemstones, she has a slightly different approach with rubies. She has family who actually cut rubies to the shape of her liking, therefore when it comes to designing pieces with rubies; she initially comes up with the design and then sources the rubies to the exact cut and shape of her design.

The family works well together, and everyone has to vote yes to every single design before it goes into production. Not every design makes it immediately to production- Pooja and Keshav usually have a more objective view, as they know the clientele and demographic best. Kumud is absolutely open to critics and believes that designing is an ever-evolving process, so if a design doesn’t get a yes, it goes back into redesigning process, finessing, and refining the design. This back and forth can take months to finally coming up with the perfect design that gets the approval of the whole family.

Every design is original, Kamyen never recreate any of the high jewellery designs, and as a result they have cultivated an exceptional reputation amongst connoisseurs, assuring them that their Kamyen piece is one of one and never to be repeated. Kumud’s understanding of art and her talented eyes in visualizing appealing designs is a great force in coming up with unique designs, she has a team of designers that she mentors and works with her in completing the designs, drawings, gouaches and CAD.

The workshop manager and craftsmen are all experienced jewelers with years of expertise and impeccable attention to details. While we were at the workshop, each was working on a specific section of a piece and it was an experience seeing them crafting every single part of each piece by hand and then assembles them together. All those elaborate designs were coming to life right in front of our eyes, with Kumud’s designs all over the workshop, you could totally feel her creative aura around and the admiration for her vision was obvious. Besides being an artist, she is a mother and backbone of the household, her maternal kindness and sense of family was palpable in her interacting with her designers and craftsmen.

Spending few days with Kumud and being involved in the whole operation was truly an eye opening experience in how much work goes into every single piece; from sourcing the stones, to vision, drawings and then production. We  now have an even greater respect and appreciation for Kamyen pieces. Next time we are going to India, we have plans to take a journey with Kumud to Jaipur, Rajesthan and observe her stone sourcing, and take a deeper dive into her process.

We cannot wait to see and try on the finished pieces that we witnessed in the production, and look forward to viewing those pieces in November at Jewellery Arabia in Bahrain.

Here is a highlight of each year from 2011-2020 chosen from many events and pieces. In my opinion, featured pieces are the most iconic red carpet jewelry in the past decade. Each year shows the evolution of jewelry trends as well as a strong desire for timeless pieces. Amongst the selected pieces, diamonds carrying most of the weight as the main stone followed closely by the prominent presence of emeralds. It was a hard decision to pick few pieces from each year but this is just the tip of the iceberg. By searching every single event for each year, the number of spectacular jewelry is astonishing. Scrolling down when you reach 2020, you will see a dramatic decrease in choices. Due to COVID-19 and the global pandemic, all the award shows and events canceled/postponed, or broadcasted without the red carpet and audience throughout 2020, like Emmys. As for 2021, we had a promising start, so stay tuned for a complete report by end of the year. It took me almost a week to put together my list of favorites and iconic moments, I am sure many of you might disagree about which piece should’ve made the cut or not. World Diamond Group “The White Olive Tree” is a work of art representing a symbol of friendship between nations and people, created by artist and theologian Agatino Cappella in over 3kg of platinum, over 3003 diamonds (marquise and Dulce round brilliants having 82 facets) total carat weight of 366.

As members of press we had a very packed schedule to visit and experience as much as possible during our stay. Our schedule included 2 factory visits to Nanis & Peruffo for understanding the process of creating each piece, getting a feel of the atelier, production line, design studios and experience Italian jewelry to the best. Followed by a festive dinner, of course authentic Italian feast from handmade gnocchi, hand rolled cigars and Amarone wine!

Our nights were followed by attending events around the city and my favourite was an evening walk through the old town to enjoy Salvador Dalí sculptures all around the Basilica toward Museo del Gioiello Vicenza! Currently there is a temporary exhibition of ‘Precious Art: the jewellery sculptures of Salvador Dalí’ at Museo del Gioiello Vicenza that conveys his passion to express himself in space and three dimensions. The jeweled sculptures pay tribute to Dalí’s most important iconographic images, like the ballerinas, the angels and the watch. They are made from 18-carat gold and encrusted with precious stones, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Each work of art is mounted on a translucent rock crystal base and signed in gold by Dalí. There are various rooms at the museum each dedicated to different aspects of jewelry such as symbol, fashion, beauty, magic, future and more.

This once-in-a-lifetime creation features a historic, 26ct diamond from the fabled Golconda Mines. The story behind this majestic diamond is so extraordinary, that it inspired us to name the necklace after the goddess of good fortune… “Fortuna”.

Musson Jewellers was founded 46 years ago by Robert and Kerry Musson in Sydney, Australia. Musson is one of the enduring jewellery design houses that manufacture their exclusive creations in their state of the art North Shore studio. As a family business, with sons Olivar as creative director and Damien as managing director, the house is moving from strength to strength providing finest and the most exquisite jewels to Australian as well as International clientele. Being one of the most awarded jewellery houses in Australia, Musson Jewellers is also an Argyle Pink Diamonds Select Atelier, having access to beyond rare pink diamonds mined in Argyle mine, Western Australia.

Last year the house acquired a very rare and extraordinary diamond; the famous 26ct old mine diamond that was purchased three decades ago at a car boot sale by a woman residing in West London for as small as 10 pounds as a costume jewellery. The owner only realised the value of the ring she was wearing everyday for the past 30 years when someone pointed out that such a large size stone needs to be appraised. The rest is history, over night she was the fortunate owner of a rare Golconda mine cushion-cut diamond weighing 26.29ct I colour VVS2 GIA grade with special classification of Type IIa.
Now owned by Musson Jewellers, after months of designing and sketching, finally a once in a life time creation was born. A stellar necklace accompanied by beyond rare, 0.75ct intense, purplish pink diamond from the Argyle Signature Tender 2009 and over five carats of smaller argyle pink diamonds in a unique design, handcrafted in gold and platinum.

As a Miami Beach resident, I have always been a fan of the wonderful Bal Harbour shops. But one would need to be drinking far too many mojitos not to notice the shift as more and more top tier jewelry houses move their flagship boutiques to the Miami Design District.

With an open courtyard housing several of the worlds best luxury brand watches, including Hublot, Vacheron, IWC, Ulysse Nardin, Jaeger-Le-Coultre, A. Lange & Sohne, Rolex and more, this diamonds girl decided to check out the jewelry houses!

First stop was the king of diamonds, Harry Winston. This beautiful double story boutique has everything your heart could ever desire, from haute joaillerie to engagement rings. My top pick? This perfect necklace, with two lines of round diamonds twisting together and ending in perfect pear shape diamonds. Elegant and chic, it has more than enough ice to keep you cool on a hot Miami day!

Next up….Cartier. The boutique has several jaw dropping one of a kind pieces from their high jewelry range that will have you gasping in delight, and it also houses all their collections (amulette, cactus, panthere, just en clou, trinity, and ecrou), so this is where you can add to your stack of love bracelets!  I chose to play with the cactus collection, and of course, I can never, ever resist a piece of panthere! This particular Panthere Cuff, with its emerald eyes, and sapphire and diamond body was without doubt one of the most beautiful I have ever seen!

From Cartier I crossed the road to Van Cleef & Arpels, where the charming team was waiting to warmly welcome me with several delights! I have always been a huge fan of the iconic VCA zipper necklaces, so having the opportunity to play with one was a dream come true. Yes, the zippers actually work, and you can wear the necklace with the zip as open or as closed as you wish. Some fun facts: every zipper necklace is unique, no two are the same! And did you know the necklaces can also be converted into a bracelet? What a bonus! And how could I resist the delight of stacking a handful of VCA rings? And trying on an all diamonds Fairy Watch? Never!

By this stage, Bulgari was calling my name….Playing Diva has never been more fun than with Bulgari’s Diva Collection! I stacked up on bracelets and rings, although the store has an incredible range that includes earrings and necklaces too. The all diamond Diva items were of course a firm favorite of mine, but truth be told, each piece is stunningly beautiful.

Other places to visit include Jason Of Beverly Hills, whose edgy fine jewelry has been a hit in Miami. From diamond covered angel wings to diamond covered bullets, and with champagne always on tap, this super cool boutique is a welcome addition to the Miami jewelry scene. On the upper level sits two boutiques which are well worth a visit – Yvel and Sevan Bicikci. Yvel specializes in combining pearls with other precious stones, for example, diamonds and sapphires. The resulting creations are modern and fresh – no dowdy pearls here! Sevan Bicikci is a Turkish design who I first met at a jewelry show in Las Vegas many years ago. I was delighted to  discover his plans to open in Miami, as there is absolutely nothing like his jewelry to be found anywhere here! Each piece is a miniature work of art that has to be seen to be believed, oftentimes paying homage to his native Turkey with bejeweled images from the city housed under glass domes. Like I said – it as to be seen to be believed! That ends my Miami Design District tour – I hope I have sufficiently wet your appetite so that you pay this beautiful area a visit when next in Miami.   • Hong Kong March show is the second most important diamond & jewellery show that takes place in Hong Kong, right after the September show. The halls were packed with visitors and of course it was a sea of exhibitors starting from melee stones to extraordinary 50cts and above in rare colors and qualities. Jewellery show was similar in terms of exhibitors, there were jewelleres from all around the globe starting with semi-costume types to superb high-end brands and then rare vintage and antique pieces.   • BaselWorld 2016 was my first Basel World experience and needless to say until last day I couldn’t digest the how magnificent the show was, from the brands display which were phenomenal to new reveals in watch industry, the world of high-end jewellery and finally the sea of loose stone dreams, everything about BaselWorld was magnificent. During the Basel marathon, I came across some incredible watches and high-end jewellery that you can see most of them by searching #ChampagneGemGoesToBasel on Instagram.   • Luxury By JCK 2016 fast forward to June and once again Las Vegas opened its doors to not one but 3 different annual shows, first stop was Luxury By JCK where the number of exhibitors were endless and if you could move fast enough through the hallways you would be able to get a glimpse of the phenomenal pieces that were up for display. I can’t emphasis enough that I needed at least 3 more days to be somewhat confident that I have seen at least 50% of the exhibitors by passing by their booth! after all it is the most important diamond and jewellery show in Northern America.   • Couture Show 2016 is happening along side the JCK each year with a very important difference, Couture is more emphasizing on design and creativity in jewellery. High end brands displaying their newly launched collections in luxury villas in Wynn along with lavish booths with amazing set up and layout that is so welcoming to walk through and enjoy the finest pieces of high-end jewellery in luxurious location that they should be. My Couture experience was rather short but in that limited time I managed to view enough pieces to be convinced that next year I have to spend more time at Couture!
