10 years ago, Betul (Beti) Akdemir joined Lida Diamond as creative director and since then the brand has evolved more into retail aspect as well. New generation is coming along with Ilker, the eldest son of Erol and Betul has joined the business. He is bringing in fresh perspectives on growing the business and infusing the brand with ideas that attract new generation of diamond and high jewellery buyers while honouring the tradition.

Celebrating Excellence: Jewelry Awards

One of the most anticipated events in the world of Australian jewelry is the biannual Jewelry Awards hosted by The Diamond Guild Australia. These awards celebrate the creativity, innovation, and technical skill of jewellers who create stunning pieces using natural diamonds. Winning a Diamond Guild award is a mark of distinction and a testament to an artisan’s dedication to their craft. The DGA’s jewellery awards not only celebrate the talent within the Australian jewellery industry but also serve as a platform to promote the beauty and value of natural diamonds. By exclusively recognizing pieces made with natural diamonds, the DGA reinforces the importance of these precious gemstones and encourages consumers to appreciate their unique qualities. The last Jewellery Award was held in 2018 and after five years of hiatus due to COVID-19 finally the most anticipated Jewellery Awards returned in 2023.

Jeff Einstein was hoping to see a new refreshing style of designs in this year’s DGA awards, as emerging and existing talent possibly didn’t have as many opportunities to enter competitions, and over the past few years have been able to explore new designs and techniques.

 

Olivar Musson also adds that the excitement surrounding these awards is palpable. Designers all over Australia have been preparing to unleash their creativity in the most prestigious diamond design awards in Australia. I know at Musson, we have been developing concepts for years that we are ready to present in these awards with the goal of winning the Supreme Award for a third time.

The DGA’s jewellery awards are renowned for their rigorous judging process, ensuring that only the most deserving pieces are recognized and celebrated. A panel of esteemed industry experts, including renowned jewellers, gemologists, and designers, carefully evaluate each submission based on criteria such as design, craftsmanship, use of materials, and overall aesthetic appeal. This ensures that the awards maintain a high standard of excellence and provide a platform for exceptional talent to shine. For 2023 Jewellery Awards I was honoured to be part of the judging panel along with Karlie Ungar Creative Director of CARLA ZAMPATTI, Dr Brandon Gien CEO of GOOD DESIGN AUSTRALIA and Lester Brand Managing Director of LESTER BRAND JEWELLERY.

The award ceremony was held on October 24th at The Langham Gold Coast, an invigorating and glamorous evening that brought together industry leaders to celebrate their craft and most exceptional creations.  The winners of each category were announced, and their exceptional pieces were showcased, allowing attendees to appreciate the beauty and craftsmanship up close.

Nadia Neuman, founder of Mondial by Nadia and winner of Fancy Colour Diamond category as well as the winner of Supreme Award mentions that her inspiration always comes from the gemstone itself and then it’s the story I want to tell through the creation we make. Its finding a uniquely beautiful stone and figuring out how best to convey what makes it so special. It’s the unique colour or shape or feeling of a particular stone that inspires the theme of the piece. If were using a selection of stones, its what those stones say as a collection; the variety, the rarity and what they create together that sparks an idea. When entering a competition, I’ve never considered what’s traditional. There are certain rules that we know work through experience, there are tones and hues when combined that bring out the best in gemstones or add contrast. There are certain styles of setting and textures of gold that make a piece look contemporary or of an era but other than those things the most exciting part about entering a competition is that there are very few boundaries. The creation process is all consuming and very exciting. Once we’ve decided on the stone and I have a clearer idea of what we want to say, there is inspiration everywhere and that’s how the creation evolves. With regards to creating something unique, it’s a moment when I get to create something that I personally love. That’s what makes it unique. It’s a particular style and taste and combination of stones, metals and ideas that make sense to me personally.

Here are few of my favorite pieces from Stenzhorn, Roberto Coin, Picchiotti, Chantecler, Palmiero, Yoko London, Hans D Krieger and Crivelli. World Diamond Group “The White Olive Tree” is a work of art representing a symbol of friendship between nations and people, created by artist and theologian Agatino Cappella in over 3kg of platinum, over 3003 diamonds (marquise and Dulce round brilliants having 82 facets) total carat weight of 366.

As members of press we had a very packed schedule to visit and experience as much as possible during our stay. Our schedule included 2 factory visits to Nanis & Peruffo for understanding the process of creating each piece, getting a feel of the atelier, production line, design studios and experience Italian jewelry to the best. Followed by a festive dinner, of course authentic Italian feast from handmade gnocchi, hand rolled cigars and Amarone wine!

Our nights were followed by attending events around the city and my favourite was an evening walk through the old town to enjoy Salvador Dalí sculptures all around the Basilica toward Museo del Gioiello Vicenza! Currently there is a temporary exhibition of ‘Precious Art: the jewellery sculptures of Salvador Dalí’ at Museo del Gioiello Vicenza that conveys his passion to express himself in space and three dimensions. The jeweled sculptures pay tribute to Dalí’s most important iconographic images, like the ballerinas, the angels and the watch. They are made from 18-carat gold and encrusted with precious stones, diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires. Each work of art is mounted on a translucent rock crystal base and signed in gold by Dalí. There are various rooms at the museum each dedicated to different aspects of jewelry such as symbol, fashion, beauty, magic, future and more.

As much as we love the skyline, the islands, and dim sum, nothing compares with a visit to master jewelers Forms Jewellery . The founders, Tzvika Janover and Elad Assor, are no strangers to exceptional stones, coming from multi-generational families of diamond cutters. Recently, Gilly Strauss joined the executive team as CEO, bringing over 18 years of experience in luxury brand building and value creation to the Forms Family. No strangers to the FORMS brand, we excitedly planned to spend time in the FORMS Hong Kong workshop, eager to learn more about this extraordinary jeweler.

Before we share our experiences with you, lets backtrack a moment to understand why we are so passionate about this brand. Bear in mind that we spend all day every day viewing exceptional jewelry. Yet nothing ever prepares us for the thrill of seeing a new FORMS creation. Each piece is one of a kind, hand crafted, and includes diamonds and gemstones rarely seen elsewhere. Over and above this…it’s all about the design! A FORMS piece can be held from any angle, and the beauty will still captivate you. The details are astounding, and the brand strives to “seek perfection in every imaginable detail of every piece, calling them works of patience”.

The artisans in the workshop patiently handcraft the creations, turning exceptional designs into flawless pieces of jewelry. The design and production artisans work seamlessly together painstakingly handcrafting each step of the process. The resulting pieces are perfect for the FORMS woman, who is as individual, unique, and stylish as the FORMS jewelry she wears. Through the years the design team have evolved the FORMS signature, but the commitment to selecting unusual gemstones and working with precision cut diamonds (diamonds that are custom cut for a specific piece) remains constant.

With only 100 new pieces created each year, FORMS strive to make sure every design counts. The new FORMS collection is based on the ELEMENTS and subtly conveys images of fire, ice,earth and water.  First we saw the earrings, which are detailed, light, flexible, and elegant.

The design team worked hard to make sure they used the least amount of gold possible – when it comes to earrings, a few grams can make all the difference. In addition to the earrings, we saw several new rings that are part of the new collection. We saw designs that have been influenced by both floral (earth) and fire (flame) elements. The new rings all have clean continuous lines, a look only achievable by hand carving each piece until it is exactly right.

As a Miami Beach resident, I have always been a fan of the wonderful Bal Harbour shops. But one would need to be drinking far too many mojitos not to notice the shift as more and more top tier jewelry houses move their flagship boutiques to the Miami Design District.

With an open courtyard housing several of the worlds best luxury brand watches, including Hublot, Vacheron, IWC, Ulysse Nardin, Jaeger-Le-Coultre, A. Lange & Sohne, Rolex and more, this diamonds girl decided to check out the jewelry houses!

First stop was the king of diamonds, Harry Winston. This beautiful double story boutique has everything your heart could ever desire, from haute joaillerie to engagement rings. My top pick? This perfect necklace, with two lines of round diamonds twisting together and ending in perfect pear shape diamonds. Elegant and chic, it has more than enough ice to keep you cool on a hot Miami day!

Next up….Cartier. The boutique has several jaw dropping one of a kind pieces from their high jewelry range that will have you gasping in delight, and it also houses all their collections (amulette, cactus, panthere, just en clou, trinity, and ecrou), so this is where you can add to your stack of love bracelets!  I chose to play with the cactus collection, and of course, I can never, ever resist a piece of panthere! This particular Panthere Cuff, with its emerald eyes, and sapphire and diamond body was without doubt one of the most beautiful I have ever seen!

From Cartier I crossed the road to Van Cleef & Arpels, where the charming team was waiting to warmly welcome me with several delights! I have always been a huge fan of the iconic VCA zipper necklaces, so having the opportunity to play with one was a dream come true. Yes, the zippers actually work, and you can wear the necklace with the zip as open or as closed as you wish. Some fun facts: every zipper necklace is unique, no two are the same! And did you know the necklaces can also be converted into a bracelet? What a bonus! And how could I resist the delight of stacking a handful of VCA rings? And trying on an all diamonds Fairy Watch? Never!

By this stage, Bulgari was calling my name….Playing Diva has never been more fun than with Bulgari’s Diva Collection! I stacked up on bracelets and rings, although the store has an incredible range that includes earrings and necklaces too. The all diamond Diva items were of course a firm favorite of mine, but truth be told, each piece is stunningly beautiful.

Other places to visit include Jason Of Beverly Hills, whose edgy fine jewelry has been a hit in Miami. From diamond covered angel wings to diamond covered bullets, and with champagne always on tap, this super cool boutique is a welcome addition to the Miami jewelry scene. On the upper level sits two boutiques which are well worth a visit – Yvel and Sevan Bicikci. Yvel specializes in combining pearls with other precious stones, for example, diamonds and sapphires. The resulting creations are modern and fresh – no dowdy pearls here! Sevan Bicikci is a Turkish design who I first met at a jewelry show in Las Vegas many years ago. I was delighted to  discover his plans to open in Miami, as there is absolutely nothing like his jewelry to be found anywhere here! Each piece is a miniature work of art that has to be seen to be believed, oftentimes paying homage to his native Turkey with bejeweled images from the city housed under glass domes.   • Hong Kong March show is the second most important diamond & jewellery show that takes place in Hong Kong, right after the September show. The halls were packed with visitors and of course it was a sea of exhibitors starting from melee stones to extraordinary 50cts and above in rare colors and qualities. Jewellery show was similar in terms of exhibitors, there were jewelleres from all around the globe starting with semi-costume types to superb high-end brands and then rare vintage and antique pieces.   • BaselWorld 2016 was my first Basel World experience and needless to say until last day I couldn’t digest the how magnificent the show was, from the brands display which were phenomenal to new reveals in watch industry, the world of high-end jewellery and finally the sea of loose stone dreams, everything about BaselWorld was magnificent.   • Luxury By JCK 2016 fast forward to June and once again Las Vegas opened its doors to not one but 3 different annual shows, first stop was Luxury By JCK where the number of exhibitors were endless and if you could move fast enough through the hallways you would be able to get a glimpse of the phenomenal pieces that were up for display. I can’t emphasis enough that I needed at least 3 more days to be somewhat confident that I have seen at least 50% of the exhibitors by passing by their booth! after all it is the most important diamond and jewellery show in Northern America.   • Couture Show 2016 is happening along side the JCK each year with a very important difference, Couture is more emphasizing on design and creativity in jewellery. High end brands displaying their newly launched collections in luxury villas in Wynn along with lavish booths with amazing set up and layout that is so welcoming to walk through and enjoy the finest pieces of high-end jewellery in luxurious location that they should be. My Couture experience was rather short but in that limited time I managed to view enough pieces to be convinced that next year I have to spend more time at Couture! Hi Jewelristas,

Last night I participated at the opening night of Stefano Canturi exhibition in Melbourne.
The exhibition show cases some of the very famous designs, the original sketches and drawings that Stefano did over the years. As always the pieces were stunning and the history behind each piece as well as the amazing drawings were mesmerizing.
The exhibition is located on fortyfive Flinders Lane and will be on from February 19th – March 2nd, so if you happen to be in the city that’s definitely a must see.
