Here is a recap of my favourite pieces that I came across during past couple of months starting from Hong Kong Diamond & Jewellery Show in March to BaselWorld 2016, Luxury by JCK & Couture Show 2016 in Las Vegas.

Hong Kong March show is the second most important diamond & jewellery show that takes place in Hong Kong, right after the September show. The halls were packed with visitors and of course it was a sea of exhibitors starting from melee stones to extraordinary 50cts and above in rare colors and qualities. Jewellery show was similar in terms of exhibitors, there were jewelleres from all around the globe starting with semi-costume types to superb high-end brands and then rare vintage and antique pieces. BaselWorld 2016 was my first Basel World experience and needless to say until last day I couldn’t digest the how magnificent the show was, from the brands display which were phenomenal to new reveals in watch industry, the world of high-end jewellery and finally the sea of loose stone dreams, everything about BaselWorld was magnificent. Luxury By JCK 2016 fast forward to June and once again Las Vegas opened its doors to not one but 3 different annual shows, first stop was Luxury By JCK where the number of exhibitors were endless and if you could move fast enough through the hallways you would be able to get a glimpse of the phenomenal pieces that were up for display. I can’t emphasis enough that I needed at least 3 more days to be somewhat confident that I have seen at least 50% of the exhibitors by passing by their booth! after all it is the most important diamond and jewellery show in Northern America. Couture Show 2016 is happening along side the JCK each year with a very important difference, Couture is more emphasizing on design and creativity in jewellery. High end brands displaying their newly launched collections in luxury villas in Wynn along with lavish booths with amazing set up and layout that is so welcoming to walk through and enjoy the finest pieces of high-end jewellery in luxurious location that they should be. My Couture experience was rather short but in that limited time I managed to view enough pieces to be convinced that next year I have to spend more time at Couture! Wow, finally it was the NIGHT and all I can say is such an AWESOME night beside every success the Diamonds and Jewels were way over the top.

I have few favorites which I almost adore the total look and the rest were fantastic too.

My favorites are:

Jennifer Aniston in Fred Leighton, Jennifer Lawrence in Chopard, Heidi Klum in Lorraine Schwartz, Charlize Theron in Harry Winston and Anne Hathaway in Tiffany & Co.

Rectangular Watches

Haven’t talked about watches for a while but shared some pics on Champagne Gem’s Facebook page. I am growing on rectangular watches more and more, maybe just saw a fashion icon wearing them so urban chic or because my taste beginning to change, what do you think?

I have searched for some ideas and so far I narrowed my list of All Time Rectangular watches down to three most influential watch making brands ever:

Franck Muller: Art Deco, Grace Curvex

IWC: Da Vinci Family

Cartier: Santos Family
If I am ever going to buy and choose one of them, it would definitely be either Franck Muller or IWC as they are pure watch makers and I appreciate being anonymous (not so much head to toe branded) and high quality of craftsmanship.

Franck Muller just launched the Most Complicated Wrist Watch that was ever made and it contains 36 complications, 1483 components and 99 jewels.

Watches: Complicated or Smooth?

Hi Jewelristas,

It has been a long time since I wrote about watches and tonight I am in the MOOD finally to write a long post on watches only! remember the post on PANERAI?

There are so many terms and definitions in watchmaking that I don’t know their meaning too and now we are going through most of them together:

Movement: The mechanism that measures the passage of time and displays the current time.

Mechanical movement: is a watch that uses a mechanical mechanism to measure the passage of time

Mechanical movements are less accurate and often with errors in seconds per day, though require constant maintenance and adjustment but public are so attracted to them beside all the above facts and high prices for one reason: Craftsmanship!

additional functions on a watch besides the basic timekeeping ones are traditionally called complications. Mechanical watches may have these complications:

Automatic winding or self-winding—in order to eliminate the need to wind the watch, this device winds the watch’s mainspring automatically using the natural motions of the wrist, with a rotating-weight mechanism.
Calendar—displays the date, and often the weekday, month, and year. Simple calendar watches do not account for the different lengths of the months, requiring the user to reset the date 5 times a year, but perpetual calendar watches account for this, and even leap years.An annual calendar does not make the leap year adjustment, so the date must be reset on March 1 every fourth year.
Alarm—a bell or buzzer that can be set to go off at a given time.
Chronograph—a watch with additional stopwatch functions. Buttons on the case start and stop the second hand and reset it to zero, and usually several subdials display the elapsed time in larger units.
Hacking feature—found on military watches, a mechanism that stops the second hand while the watch is being set. This enables watches to be synchronized to the precise second. This is now a very common feature on many watches.
Moon phase dial—shows the phase of the moon with a moon face on a rotating disk.
Wind indicator or power reserve indicator—mostly found on automatic watches, a subdial that shows how much power is left in the mainspring, usually in terms of hours left to run.
Repeater—a watch that chimes the hours audibly at the press of a button. This rare complication was originally used before artificial lighting to check what time it was in the dark. These complex mechanisms are now only found as novelties in extremely expensive luxury watches.
Tourbillon—this expensive feature was originally designed to make the watch more accurate, but is now simply a demonstration of watchmaking virtuosity. In an ordinary watch the balance wheel oscillates at different rates, because of gravitational bias, when the watch is in different positions, causing inaccuracy. In a tourbillon, the balance wheel is mounted in a rotating cage so that it will experience all positions equally. The mechanism is usually exposed on the face to show it off.

Electronic Movement: can be completely electronic with no moving parts which is called Quartz and works with battery, plus shows the most accurate time.

I think I covered most of the parts that you should know about watches, the decision is up to you but try to be creative when it comes to watch brands and go for the ones which are less known to public! be unique…
